Riiva does not belong to anyone. That much is known for a fact and everyone agrees to it in their hearts even if no one would never admit it out loud. Yet at the same time - in a weird sense - everyone owns her. Few villages that still resides and struggle to survive in her territory, claim that she is "theirs" while in truth no one dares to approach her. Everyone speaks of her in possessing manner like she was some minor god they made up. Nonetheless She is used as warning and even worshiped as god by people of the swamps.  

All made up by human mind and their need to believe in something of course.

Stories of Riiva eating dishonest warriors and evil-minded people is not just pure myth though. Well, in reality this bird does not look into peoples eyes and soul to sieve out the wrong and the foul - in fact it doesn't have any significance to her at all if you wronged in your life or if you are angel incarnation - she will try to savage you anyway. But usually only that kind of people try out their luck with taiming her - and are failing successfully. Even if she mostly likes to enjoy carcasses, she will attack smaller tyto cousins of hers if they get too close AND she will attack any stryx with a rider - no exception. 
Riiva is in fact a really lonely and wretched soul you see. Her sanity waning due to constant pain and paranoia of her past. This pain she will share with anyone who gets close enough to hear rattle of rusted shackles around her legs and neck and at that moment anyone will come to understand that this stryx is no longer living in this world but is more like stuck in events of the past. She is completely lost sense of time and is often seen flying at nights aswell as days. Sometimes it is as if she does not sleep at all.
There is rumor that she may have belonged to someone whose soul matched perfectly with hers. They must have bonded and trained together but this someone got killed in some unknown event far away from the place where Gryph looms nowadays. No proof of this remains however and so it is usually just written off as useless romanticism of people seeking to tame her.
